Remembering Haskell Fitz-Simons

Share

Meanwhile let me mention the recent death of our friend Haskell Fitz-Simons, long-time director of the Raleigh Little Theatre. This is noted at the top of CVNC‘s home page (but the note moved to the foot of this page 5/21*). The memorial service is tomorrow (5/21). I can’t imagine there are any people who were involved with the theatre – or who attended it, in the last 30 years – who were not touched by Haskell’s genius – or his kindness.

I was fortunate to know him – and his mother – for a very long time. When my mother went to Hood College (Frederick, MD) as a freshman, in 1931 or 1932 or so, Haskell’s mom showed up for what I was told was her first post-college teaching gig, in the English Department. It was a remarkable thing when, years later, they showed up together at Springmoor, where Marion and my mom were regular dinner companions. We miss both of ‘em. We’ll miss Haskell, too. Lots.
